The continued conflict in Sudan is disproportionately impacting on the lives of Sudanese women and girls, severely hampering all humanitarian operations. Timely assistance is critical to support women and girls whereby access to basic needs and services becomes more challenging and risks of gender-based or sexual violence increase. Women and girls need protection, food, water, dignity kits and safe spaces.
Even before this violence, humanitarian needs were already at an all-time high. One third of the population – a staggering 15.8 million people – need humanitarian aid. At least 4 million children and pregnant and lactating women are severely malnourished. Some 3.7 million people are internally displaced, mostly in Darfur.
What is UN Women doing on the ground?
We are in touch with Sudanese women’s civil society organizations to continuously analyze the needs of women and girls to ensure they receive urgent needed support. We are conducting rapid gender assessments to ensure that up-to-date data and analysis on the gender dynamics of the crisis and its impacts are available to all those working on the response.
UN Women is working with women’s organizations, partners and other UN agencies to provide immediate lifesaving response to enable women to remain safe and cover their basic needs. This include – among others - PEP kits, dignity kits, psychosocial support and trauma assistance, and emergency cash assistance.
