As we gather with friends and family to celebrate the festive season and welcome in a new year, we ask you to take a moment to reflect on the lives of women and girls who are suffering due to the conflicts in the Middle East, in Sudan, and in too many other parts of the world.
The conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine continue to disproportionately impact women and girls, while natural disasters like the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, and the cyclone in Myanmar, indiscriminately shattered the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable women and girls. The brutal attacks by Hamas on Israel on 7 October led to numerous accounts of sexual violence, while women and their families in Gaza are in desperate and immediate need of food, water, electricity and medicine.
UN Women, along with local partners, remains at the forefront of addressing the urgent needs of women and girls in crisis. In Gaza, UN Women is providing lifesaving assistance to nearly 30% of all women-headed households and providing financial support to women’s organizations to address the emergency needs of the affected women and girls. Local organizations in Myanmar have been supported by UN Women to provide livelihood services and agricultural activities to survivors of gender-based violence and women at risk. While in Ukraine, UN Women has partnered with local associations to ensure that vulnerable internally displaced people, including women with disabilities, are not left behind in the humanitarian response.
