Following the recent escalation of the decades-long conflict in the region, the Government of the Republic of Armenia reported that between 24 September and 4 October 2023, 100,632 refugees arrived in the country. 52 per cent of which are women and girls, 31 per cent are children, and 18 per cent are older persons in a situation of vulnerability facing acute heath and protection needs. The needs are only expected to increase due to the loss of homes and livelihoods.
UN Women is committed to supporting the refugees in Armenia, especially the women and girls, at this time of greatest need.
We are working to ensure that women’s priority needs are addressed, and their rights respected: We support women’s civil society organizations in providing women’s access to information, psychological support and protection services as well as to basic necessities such as food, medicine, and hygiene products, accommodation and winter items. We support women’s access to livelihoods, including the ability to work and earn an income. We are conducting rapid gender assessments to ensure that up-to-date data and analysis are available to inform the refugee response.
